Product Disappointment: Maybelline Baby Lips

I follow several beauty bloggers and vloggers, so many of my makeup purchases are based off of their recommendations. I like to know that what I'm buying has had the approval of someone who is knowledgable and well-versed in makeup and beauty. One such product was the Baby Lips Lipbalm collection by Maybelline. It seemed that everyone was using them, raving about how amazing they were, how the product left just the most balmy look and feel to their lips, and was so refreshing to apply. Hearing their overwhelming love for such an affordable product, I made a mental note to pick up a tube or two the next time I visited my local Target store. The first couple of times that I checked, Target was sold out. Again, I thought this was a good sign because if so many people loved them then they had to be exceptional and worth the wait. Finally they came back in stock and I decided to pick up two: 05-Quenched and 30-Peach Kiss. They were $2.99 (USD) each which is on the cheaper side for a lip product.

The Quenched flavor (blue packaging) applies clear and goes on smoothly. It smells of lemon and vanilla, which is nice in theory but the taste (accidental tastes, I wasn't consuming it voluntarily) bothered me and seemed to stick in my mouth during the day. I definitely got more use out of this one and enjoyed it at first. However, after using the product a couple of days in a row, my lips were anything but quenched. They were actually very irritated and couldn't even be soothed with my regular lip balm. It took me a few days off of the Baby Lips product to get my lips back to normal and feeling nice. I'm not sure if anyone else has had this reaction but I was pretty disappointed and a bit shocked since I have never had a reaction to any kind of beauty product since I do not have particularly sensitive skin.

The Peach Kiss flavor (purple packaging) has a bit of tint to it which is, not surprisingly, peachy in color. The application is smooth and leaves a nice balmy look to the lips. The flavor is (surprise!) peachy and much better than weird lemony Quenched. Also, since I didn't use this flavor daily, it did not have a negative overall effect on my lips. The little color that it left on my lips didn't last very long but neither product seemed to stay on my lips for an extended period of time.

Overall I was so disappointed with this product. After all the recommendations and positive reviews, I was sad that I didn't get on with it as well as everyone else. Honestly, I feel like I might be a weird exception and the first to review this product negatively. But oh well, life goes on and I feel my money will be better spent on my regular lip balms. Let me know if you guys enjoyed the Baby Lips collection in the comments and I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

  3. The babylips haven't come to Norway yet, but if they reach the stores here they will most probably be heavily overpriced (as all cosmetics is here, online shopping ftw :p )..I tend to steer away from Maybelline anyway, I'm more drawn towards cruelty free brands :)

    1. yeah the mark up on cosmetics is ridiculous even here so i can't imagine what you guys have to pay in other countries. i didn't know that maybelline wasn't cruelty-free! do you have a blog post or anything about cruelty-free brands?

  4. Interesting! I have the Baby Lips in Pink Punch and I love mine. I guess some products just don't work for everyone! I did a whole post about products I regret buying on my blog in case you'd like to check it out. :)
